And a thought, with a bit of theory, about the most physically demanding things I’v made: Social cohesion depends, in part, on symbols and icons that we create and invest with meaning to gather around (or fight against, as the case may be.) I think about the conflicts that are created by the tension between the conformity required to maintain social cohesion, and the experience of the self. I think the things I mare are partly an attempt to make things that come from my own fight against conformity, but having studied art and understanding that art happens only in the social world, the things I make then paradoxically become social, if I’m lucky.
